Research interests

Ryan is interested in relational and processual approaches to understanding the urban margins centred on power dynamics and urban reconfigurations. His research explores the relationship between the complex uneven development of cities and the contemporary human condition. By extension, this work often entails critique of the ‘present-centred’ social science that predominates today. His recent research has focused on Roma stigmatisation in long-term view, the invisibilization of anti-Roma racisms, and relational understandings of contemporary urban youth. His research engages ideas from urban theory, post-philosophical sociology and the sociology of knowledge in integrating of psychic and social processes.
